WAYNE
COOPER
Consult of Mexico
in North Carolina
By: Christie Taylor
Just as constant as a Tuesday Rotary meeting, one can expect to find
Eduardo Muchado replenishing food trays, making sure there is enough
nourishment for everyone. He works quietly, diligently and always carries a
smile. Eduardo is one of 400,000 Latinos in North Carolina who contribute to
the economic growth of our state. Wayne Cooper, Consult of Mexico in North
Carolina presented three compelling reasons why their impact is so
important:
-
Over 1.3 billon dollars of goods and services are exported to Mexico from
North Carolina yearly.
-
Latinos purchase 8.3 billon dollars from North Carolina businesses
yearly.
(They spend an average of $96.00/week in grocery stores.)
-
North Carolina depends on the Latino workforce in all areas of commerce,
mostly in agriculture sector, the poultry industry, milk production and
construction.
|
Mr. Cooper also came with a strong message to dispel the myths about the
Latino community that is equally important:
-
Latinos come to the United States get on welfare. FALSE. It
is interesting to note that about 25 million dollars are paid into
Social Security and only 2 million dollars are paid out. Rarely would
one find a Latino standing in the unemployment line.
-
Latinos don’t pay taxes. FALSE. Latinos are paid by check
with the taxes subtracted on every pay stub….just like most Americans.
-
High crime among Latinos. FALSE. There is high crime
committed against Latinos.
|
Mr. Cooper ended his remarks by stating that we all need to recognize and
appreciate the cultural differences Latinos bring to Charlotte for it
creates a stronger community. As Mr. Cooper answered questions from the
audience, Eduardo was in the back of the room removing food trays. A native
of El Salvador, Eduardo came to Charlotte eight years ago in search of a
better job. He dreams of owning a restaurant one day.
