DISTRICT
GOVERNOR BILL BELK By: Leigh Derby
District Governor Bill Belk has a long history of leading Rotary
with actions and deeds and today he led with words. Bill delivered
an encouraging and enlightening message to Charlotte Rotary and was
recognized with several standing ovations.
The District Governor said, “This last year we sowed the seeds of
love and the harvest is at hand. And it is tremendous! By surpassing
our $80 million goal, we finished the Polio Plus campaign by raising
over $100 million last year. By this accomplishment, as well as the
completion of numerous projects in our local and international
communities … we lend a helping hand for the survival of those whose
lives depend on us.”
Bill reminded us that we do not achieve our goals alone and that as
in life, Rotary is like an extended family. The Rotary Family now
includes over 1.2 million people not including the Rotary-affiliated
groups such as Rotaract and the Inner Wheel. All are dedicated to
improving lives in their communities and throughout the world.
“Service is the day-to-day work of Rotary”, said Belk.
The Rotarian theme this year under President Jonathan Majiyagbe from
Nigeria, is, “Lend a Hand”. He is inspiring Rotarians to rise to the
challenges of the world and to lift the lives, lend a hand, and
touch the hearts of people in need with a renewed sense of mission.
The DG encouraged us to STAY IN ROTARY, even when we feel we cannot
give 100%. “What we do together is not as important as that we are
together”, he said. For example, Paul Harris, who founded Rotary in
1905, had a nervous breakdown and resigned from Rotary. His fellow
Rotarians encouraged him to come back. Rotary began the Service Club
movement. The president of Kiwanis called Rotary’s founding “the
most significant sociological development of the 20th century.”
Today Rotary has one of the world’s largest foundations and has
raised over $1.3 billion. Rotary started service to children with
physical disabilities that lead to the formation of Easter Seals.
Rotary was the “catalyst” that started the United Nations in 1945.
Today Rotary is finishing the eradication of polio – only the second
disease to disappear from our planet - accomplished by vaccinating 6
billion children throughout the world. Our DG concluded with the
statement, “Let’s make a projection –Rotary’s future will exceed our
greatest expectations! Working together, ready and willing to help
our brothers and sisters in need, one hand can become many, and
there is no limit to what the helping hands of Rotary can
accomplish.”

NO PERSONAL PRIVILEGES |

Frequently, friends ask whether
Rotarians receive special business benefits from their Rotary
membership. Should Rotarians expect a special discount or some
preferential service just because they are dealing with a fellow
Rotarian? The answer is clearly “no.” The RI Manual of Procedure
expressly states the Rotary position on this matter. The policy,
originally approved by the RI Board of Directors in 1933, is
that in business and professional relations a “Rotarian should
not expect, and far less should a Rotarian ask for, more
consideration or advantages from a fellow Rotarian than the
latter would give to any other business or professional
associate…Any use of the fellowship of Rotary as a means of
gaining an advantage or profit is contrary to the spirit of
Rotary.” On the other hand, if new or increased business comes
as the natural result of friendship created in Rotary, it is the
same normal development that takes place outside of Rotary as
well as inside, so it is not an infringement on the ethics of
Rotary membership. It is important to remember that the primary
purpose of Rotary membership is to provide each member with a
unique opportunity to serve others, and membership is not
intended as a means for personal profit or special privileges. |
