The
Governor with a Heart
By Marilynn Bowler
The combination of his Irish heritage which gave him the
twinkle in his eye, his incredible ability to relate to
his audience, his inherent sensitivity and kindness, and
his astute grasp of what it takes to nourish and grow a
profitable business make Bob Wilson the absolutely
perfect choice for Governor of Rotary International
District 7680 which, fortunately for Charlotte Rotary,
includes our club.
President Mac McCarley presented Bob Wilson to us via an
in-depth peek into our District Governor's early years.
The son of a charter member of the Charlotte North
Rotary Club, Bob learned early about the value of Rotary
to the community and to one's self. Rising from his
happy years at Dilworth Elementary School to the
family's move to an old dairy farm in east Charlotte
formerly owned by W.T. Harris, through his leadership
roles as Student Body president at East Mecklenburg High
School, then his stint at UNC-Chapel Hill as a Morehead
scholar, he flew fighter jets for the Air Force during
the Vietnam years, subsequently serving as a pilot with
the NC Air National Guard.
An enthusiastic and dedicated civic and community
servant, Governor Bob was selected in the mid-1980's by
Charlotte Habitat For Humanity to lead the Jimmy Carter
Work Project Thirteen (homes built in Optimist Park for
families in need) and continued working with President
Carter for another six years, ending his tour as
National Director of the Carter Work Project in 1992 but
remaining as #1 fly-fishing partner. Bob's role in
Rotary has remained steady; he is - and has been - an
active member of the Mooresville-Lake Norman Rotary Club
where he initiated the STARS scholarship program for
at-risk kids in the Mooresville area. District Governor
Bob Wilson lives what he preaches.
Stepping up to the microphone to address a full and
enthusiastic room packed with Rotarians and guests, Bob
Wilson displayed grace and enthusiasm in thanking our
club for its long-term participation in the many
programs to which Rotary is committed. He opened his
address to us by challenging us to reflect on the
neighborhoods we live in … and then add into that the
entire Mecklenburg County area … and again add the Lake
Norman/Mooresville area, and finally, the rest of
Iredell County and Cabarrus County, which all together
total 1.2 million people. He asked us to place all of
that into a common mindset in terms of service above
self and ethics in business which, when we match that
with a large amount of money, turns into a very big
"pot." That same "very big pot" can do great things for
neighborhoods all over the world. We can make a
difference.
After Bob delivered greetings from the president of
Rotary International - President Dong Kum Lee of South
Korea - he reminded us of this year's theme, "Make
Dreams Real" … and, he told us, let's do it for
children. With a desire to provide a long and full life
for children around the globe - regardless of race or
ethnicities even in wealthy cities such as Charlotte,
North Carolina - Rotary has an opportunity to be
successful in our mission because we are composed of
diverse, powerful, compassionate, determined and great
leaders at the highest level. We can and must achieve
our goal to help children live better and longer lives.
Governor Bob outlined three areas of focus on which he
wishes us to concentrate:
- Youth programs and projects. Whether it
is the refurbishing of bicycles for kids who
can't afford new bikes, or playgrounds for
youngsters (disabled, autistic or
disadvantaged) who can't afford what we are
all used to, Bob would like Charlotte Rotary
to join with other District 7680 clubs to
make great things happen for kids.
- Collaboration. Each Rotary club should
take a role in making events and programs
we're doing more special because we're
teaming up with other Rotary clubs. Using
the water project in Peru as an example,
wherein Charlotte Rotary is partnering with
Dilworth Rotary, because of our size and
status we should reach out to other clubs.
Specifically, Bob cited the Hamlet Rotary
Club which is small and without the funds
that our club generates. He wants us to
share our spirit and clout and - in Bob's
words - "do your magic" to help the Hamlet
club.
- Diversity. Bob wants Charlotte Rotary to
help people understand that all members of
the human race are different … age, gender,
religion, race and ethnic background … but
we're all teammates. He laughingly cited
Mooresville's current "racing connection" -
even to wearing hats backwards and calling
each other "Bubba." We must keep pace with
whom we are as a community, rather than who
we were.

Governor Wilson is hosting a Group Study Exchange (GSE)
with an Arabic team from Egypt, the members of which are
Muslim, and he plans to acquaint those team members with
our churches and synagogues and, in fact, every facet of
life in America. Conversely, he has instructed the
District Governor in Egypt to take our American team
members to a Mosque. Poignantly stated, District
Governor Bob said, "We have incredible power and the
opportunity to bridge chasms."
In closing, Bob advised us to be careful not to use
jokes or stories that offend or made fun of anyone, and
to be sensitive to all religions in terms of invocations
or prayers offered at our meetings.
Governor Wilson reminded us of four important dates:
- The annual Rotary Foundation Banquet scheduled for
November 10th at the Embassy Suites in Concord. A Peace
Scholar will be a keynote speaker as will Carolyn Jones,
the first female governor (district 5010) from the
Rotary Club of East Anchorage, Alaska who will address
us on "The Children Of Russia Project" which she has so
highly promoted.
- In the Spring, the GSE Team from Egypt will come to
Charlotte and our team will leave for a month-long
sojourn in Cairo.
- The Year-End Conference will be held at the Dunes
Marriott in Myrtle Beach. District 767 from which our
district was carved will join us. (With a wide grin,
Governor Bob assured us that he has already booked "The
Tams" for some big-time shagging.)

District Governor Wilson's last charge to us was to find
a way to help Rotary International match the Bill and
Linda Gates Foundation's grant of $100 million.
Charlotte Rotary has been generous in the past and we
must continue to give and care. "Thanks for your
generosity," he said, "from a community and people
you've never known and never heard of."
And, as only a District Governor with a sense of humor
and a warm heart could do, Bob - taking a page from his
role as a singer in The Charlotte Boy's Choir when he
was a school lad - led us all in a rousing rendition of
Happy Birthday to our very own "superman," Thomas Moore.
