2008 Youth Merit Awards

Today we had the pleasure of hosting the Charlotte Rotary Club Merit Award recipients for 2008 introduced by Club members Arch McIntosh of Charlotte Latin and Tyler Ream of Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. This is truly a "feel good" program our Club began years ago in an effort to recognize local high school seniors attending Independent and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. Each area high school, with the assistance of the principal and guidance counselors, selects one senior that best represents their school with excellent academic achievement and lives the Rotary discipline "Service Above Self". This year's 22 recipients will receive from the Club $500 each payable to the college they will attend next fall.
  
We should be most proud of these young people coming out of our high schools in Charlotte based on their many accomplishments. The recipients include the following:

Thanks to David Norman for making the Roster photo updates so easy; Harley Dickson shot a hole-in-one last week while playing golf at the State Park in Cheraw; David Barnhardt was recognized by WBT as a Hometown Hero for his outstanding contributions to the real estate industry and quality of life in the community; Carlos Sanchez, co-chair of the Chamber's annual funds drive, was cheered at last week's celebratory luncheon; Michael Elder welcomed a crowd of 700+ to the outstanding Cornerstone Celebration Awards luncheon; In case you missed it in last week's newsletter, Pam Syfert has been named the 2008 Wachovia Women In Business Lifetime Achievement Award winner. Pam will serve as the keynote speaker at the July 17 event.
    
2008-2009 Committee Assignments will be finalized this week. Several committees do not have the volunteers needed, so expect to be drafted.
   
4th Quarter Invoices are due. If you need another copy of your invoice, contact the Rotary office. Payments must be closed out by June 9.
   
Carol Jordan received notification from Rotary International that the literacy project completed last year for St. Xavier's School Godavari will be featured in the July issue of The Rotarian Magazine.
   
Henry Cantrell introduced the club's newest Rotarian, John Cantrell. John is a former president of Charlotte Top-of-the-Week and is president of H.B. Cantrell and Company. Contact John at jcantrell@carolina.rr.com. Welcome!

Patrick Gray is the founder and President of the Prevoyance Group, located outside Charlotte, NC. Prevoyance Group focuses on providing Strategic IT consulting, which combines applied strategy and process improvement to ensure large IT organizations achieve dramatic returns from their IT investment.
 
Pat graduated from Boston College with a triple major from the Carroll School of Management. After spending his youth "anchored" to the East Coast of the United States, Pat's consulting career has allowed him to work in and explore the rest of the US and much of Europe. His recent work has focused on international projects, and he has led implementations for foreign subsidiaries of several US companies. He frequently speaks for large audiences during client engagements, and once had the opportunity to speak at a former Royal Manor House near Windsor Castle.
 
Pat has a Six Sigma Black Belt certificate from Villanova University and is a member of the Project Management Institute. He has published several articles and has been quoted numerous times in major publications such as the New York Times, CIO India, InfoWorld and Business 2.0. He also publishes a monthly column on CIOUpdate.com and is looking forward to the publication of his first book: Breakthrough IT: Supercharging Organizational Growth Through Technology.
