CONGRESSMAN
RICHARD BURR By: Jeannie Falknor
North Carolina’s 5th District Congressman Richard Burr
joined Charlotte Rotarians to talk about Washington, “where we are
and what we are doing” and what he called a “very weird election
year.”
On the economy: He described the President’s tax cuts
as the stimulus that got the economy jump-started again. He said the
economy is now growing at a pace economists didn’t think the country
would return to. Burr said he would like to make a majority of the
President’s tax cuts permanent.
He said a challenge is to find out what else can be done to enhance
the interest of companies to invest and how the tax codes can be
changed to enhance incentives for investment.
Burr pointed out that the significant growth in the economy has not
been followed with the same pace of growth in job creation.
On the war on terrorism: Burr is a member of the House
Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. “There is absolutely no
question in my mind that George Bush made the right decision,” Burr
said referring to the decision to be in Iraq.
He said there “are a host of reasons why we should be there.” Those
included, he said, a realistic expectation that weapons of mass
destruction existed; Iraq’s chemical and biologic capabilities and
the ability to reconstitute a biologic program; Sadam Hussein’s
murder of innocent Iraqis amounting to genocide; and freeing a
nation from a dictator who is evil. He said the single most
important thing the United States needs to do now is turn over
control to the Iraqi people.
On the election year: Burr said this is a “weird
election cycle” because the Democratic nominee has been decided
earlier than ever, there is the largest gap between the two
conventions than ever, that the Republican convention is the latest
it has ever been and that election day is the earliest it can be,
leaving the shortest time ever for the general election campaign
period. Burr said it will come down to the individual campaign’s
ability to communicate to the people.
Burr, who lives in Winston-Salem, is serving his fifth term in
Congress. He currently is running for a U.S. Senate seat.
Also at Rotary, Bill Loftin Jr. asked that anyone who would be
willing to host a Rotary exchange student please contact him.
And Lila Rash was welcomed as a new Charlotte Rotary member. She is
director of public affairs and communications for the Charlotte
Regional Realtor Association. Rotary member Mike Rash, her husband,
introduced her.
