The Rotary Foundation The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International was born in Atlanta, Georgia on June 18, 1917 when Clevelander Arch Klumph addressed the International Convention of Rotary Clubs with these words: "When the bugle shall sound for the last fallen soldier, we will face our greatest opportunity by bringing into the folds of Rotary the flags of every civilized national throughout the world." It seems eminently proper that we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world. This monument, erected October 21, 1992 by the Rotarians of District 6630 is dedicated to the vision of Arch C. Klumph, Father of the Rotary Foundation and to 75 years of dedication to world understanding and peace through international, charitable, and education programs of the Rotary Foundation. Arch C. | Meeting Report May 23, 2000 By DAVID R. TATE |
|
| Dr. Eric
Smith, fellow Rotarian and Superintendent of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg school
district, best-defined education as the "Building of Dreams." Therein describes
the achievements of the youth merit scholars as they set foot toward higher education on a
solid foundation. Rex Welton handled the head table responsibility, while Jim Barnhardt served as acting president for President Worth. Alan Barnhardt, who is Chairman of the Youth Services Committee, introduced the award presenters. Dr. Gene Bratek and Dr. Eric Smith. Jim and Alan handled our meeting, which included normal business and the recognition of over 20 youth merit scholars. Not only was the program run in a masterful fashion, with the behind the scenes direction coming from Mary Stuart-Brooks, but our program finished 10 minutes ahead of schedule. Worth, these three deserve a merit award for their efficiency in your absence. Bob Knight introduced visiting Rotarians and guests, and was followed by Louis Zbinden with the health and happiness report. It was Claire Erb's Birthday, so all Rotarians sang Happy Birthday led by Chuck Lineberry. Chuck stated that Claire is only one year older than she was last year. Madine Fails began our program with a thoughtful invocation, which began with introductions by Dr. Gene Bratek, Head Master of Providence Day School, of the private and parochial school youth scholars. The introduction of the public school youth scholars was by Dr. Eric Smith.
