YOUTH MERIT SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS The Youth Merit Scholarship program is one of our clubs most inspiring programs every year. This year it was introduced by a former recipient, Roger Newell, who is currently serving as the Rotary District Governor from the State of Kentucky and returned after 57 years to say thank you to the club who awarded him a $100 scholarship in 1956. This award helped him to fulfill his lifelong dream of being the first person in his family to graduate from college. After Rogers inspiring words of appreciation, Gary Scott introduced Arch McIntosh from Charlotte Latin to recognize the outstanding seniors from the six private high schools.
Gregg Klemmer from Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools gave tribute to all 5500 CMS seniors who will be graduating in the Class of 2003. Outstanding facts from this senior class included $25 million in scholarships awarded, 80% plan to attend a four year college or university, 50% completed one or more AP or IB class, and 17 received appointments to the service academies. The fifteen outstanding seniors from the public schools were introduced.
Of the 21 seniors recognized, six will attend UNC-Chapel Hill, three at UNC-Charlotte, two at NC State, and one each at Elon University, Davidson College, Rollins College, Catholic University, Howard University, UNC-Wilmington, Florida A&M, University of Richmond, American University and North Carolina Central University. Head Table: David Anderson, Ron Kimble, Mac McCarley, Greg Klemmer, Gary Scott, Arch McIntosh, Debby Millhouse. Visiting Rotarians & Guests: Randall Groves; Health & Happiness: William Rikard; Song: Carroll Thomas; Invocation: Lee Morris. * * * |
Roger and Beverly Newell had the opportunity to meet Charles and Dell Dixon at a Rotary conference in Anaheim, at which time, Charles passed on the email address for the Charlotte Rotary office. When Roger explained his intent in an email back in February, I knew we were in for a treat. For those of you that missed the Tuesday meeting, you really missed a great story. It went like this Roger Newell is presently serving as the District Governor of District 6710 in Central and Western Kentucky. He graduated from East Mecklenburg High School in 1956 and in October, 1955, was selected as the Junior Rotarian of the Month from East Mecklenburg. This was a program of the Charlotte Rotary Club. One student was selected each month from the eight high schools that were in Mecklenburg at that time. Roger had always dreamed of going to Duke University, however, because of economic circumstances and lack of formal education, his family discouraged him from that idea. In May of 1956, Roger was the recipient of that scholarship and his dream to study at Duke University became a reality. He went on to serve in the US Air Force for three and a half years during the Vietnam era, worked as a Divisional Manager for Success Motivation Institute, and also had career experience as a District Executive for the Boy Scouts of America. He finally settled into the ministry of the United Methodist Church from which he just retired after nearly thirty years. Roger says had the downtown Charlotte Rotary Club in 1955 not given him that scholarship, his life would have been entirely different. On May 20, 2003, Roger had the opportunity to express his thanks to the Charlotte Rotary Club. He said that through those Rotarians Sowing the Seeds of Love back then, his life was changed forever. Rufus Allison, Ray Brietz, Jr., Hugh Cathey, Tebee Hawkins, Charlie Ibach, Mac Jackson, Powell Majors, George Page, Tom Perrin, Tom Pickard, Ralston Pound, Louis Ratcliffe, and Martin Waters were members of the Club in 1955. As President David said, its not often you have the opportunity to express your appreciation for a life changing experience to those that helped make it all possible. The twenty-one students that were honored by this Club today were indeed fortunate to hear this story. Thank you Roger and Beverly. * * * z Bob Culbertson extended a challenge to the group through a silent auction event that will end next week.
