Ernest F. Schaub

Ernest Schaub,
President and Chief Executive Officer of EnPro Industries and Phil Volponi, Junior Achievement of Charlotte, Inc.

Ernest Schaub has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of EnPro Industries since the company was formed in 2001. Prior to assuming his current position, Mr. Schaub was Executive Vice President of Goodrich Corporation, and President and Chief Operating Officer of its Engineered Industrial Products. He had joined Goodrich in 1971. On May 31, 2003, EnPro will celebrate its first anniversary as a public company. Before that time, EnPro was the Engineered Industrial Products division of Goodrich and, prior to 1999, this same division was part of Coltec Industries. Goodrich acquired Coltec because of the appeal of its aerospace businesses. From 1999 through to the summer of 2001, Goodrich sharpened its focus on the aerospace businesses, acquiring more such businesses and selling its chemical business. At this time, it was determined that the stock value would be better positioned if Goodrich’s aerospace and industrial businesses were two separate companies. Thus, the history of the split from Goodrich Industries.

All this said, EnPro is a brand new company with a 116-year history. Their products range from Garlock Sealing Technologies, which is the world’s leading supplier of gaskets and seals to chemical processing plants, steel mills, textile plants, and many others. Another company is Fairbanks Morse Engine, a builder of diesel and dual fuel engines and the sole supplier of diesel engines to the U.S. Navy. And yet another product is a range of air compressors from small to large compressors that supply air to entire manufacturing facilities. These are all manufactured by Quincy Compressor. Many, many other products are produced by subsidiaries of EnPro, including dental floss tape, dies to make sockets and wrenches, and conveyor belts. Last year, EnPro companies sold more than 120 different products to over 50,000 customers in 114 countries. It took the work of 4, 400 employees in 33 manufacturing locations in North America and Europe to produce these products. EnPro products generated sales of $710 million and a respectable profit of $40 million before taxes.

With sound operations and a commitment to a culture of excellence and trust, EnPro was able to accomplish all of these things, in spite of an uncertain economy and, following Enron and WorldCom debacles, a general public mistrust of the corporate world.  The issue that has defined EnPro’s public life is asbestos. Asbestos is a mineral that has remarkable strength, flexibility, and resistance to heat and corrosion. It, also, is known as a health hazard and has been subject to government and industry guidelines for decades. EnPro’s division of Garlock Sealing Technologies has been the target of over 500,000 claims at the cost in excess of $1 billion. To date, settlement of asbestos claims has cost American industry $54 billion. Fortunately, asbestos reform is on the horizon. Federal legislation is on the verge of being introduced.

UPDATE TO THE PARKING PROBLEMS

Parking was particularly difficult at this week’s Rotary meeting due to some confusion with another scheduled event.  Your concerns have been expressed to the hotel managers, and we are hoping to have the issue resolved.   As information, the Club’s contract with the hotel provides for the meeting facility.  Parking is not part of the agreement and is made available to us as space allows.   However, they do have a contract with the County to provide 110 spaces for the next 24 months.  Thank you for your patience.
