YOUTH MERIT SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS
by Leigh Derby
One of Charlotte Rotary's most uplifting and encouraging programs
must be the annual presentation of Youth Merit Scholarship Awards, a
program first introduced to this club in May, 1980. Twenty-four
outstanding students were awarded a $500 scholarship earmarked for
their college tuition. With so much focus today on the misdeeds of a
few, our award winners are welcome and heartening reminders that we
are blessed with fine young citizens eager to make our communities
better places.
Ann Clark, Regional Superintendent - High Schools,
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools on behalf of Superintendent Jim
Pughsley, individually recognized the public school award winners
and club member, Arch McIntosh, Headmaster of Charlotte Latin, the
private school award recipients. Our presenters mentioned each
winner's college selection, escort for the event, and lengthy list
of impressive accomplishments. These included class rank, honors,
and other school accomplishments, athletic participation and
achievements, individual awards and recognitions, volunteer
activities, church, and other community service, and other
scholarships received. After several lists, Ann Clark, no doubt
using one student as an example, said, "I don't know how she has
time for eight classes each day with all these activities."

ROTARY
FELLOWSHIPS PROGRAM |
The Rotary Fellowships
program is a structured program of Rotary International that
comprises more than 75 independent fellowships. Join the
growing number of Rotarians who are sharing their favorite
activities and professional interests through organized
recreational, vocational, and health/medical-related groups
within Rotary.
From Amateur Radio to Yachting, from Accountants to Travel
Agents, Rotary Fellowships reflect the varied interests and
occupations of Rotarians worldwide. Although objectives
differ, all fellowships share the same philosophy and
foundation. The fellowships are organized by Rotarians for
Rotarians to develop new friendships and to advance
opportunities for service.
Powell Majors dropped
off a license plate for Herb
Harriss that shows the Rotary International logo,
100 years of Rotary 1905 - 2005, with the words License
Plate Collectors Fellowship across the bottom. Which proves,
absolutely any interest you possibly have is incorporated
into the Fellowships program. Visit
www.rotary.org and type in Fellowships at the
search option for a detailed list. |

Jan Thompson has worked for years to help jail
inmates transform themselves into law-abiding citizens. As
director of inmate programs at the Mecklenburg jails, Jan
has worked to provide inmates high school educations,
substance abuse treatment and information aimed at curbing
domestic violence. On May 5th, Jan was presented the Liberty
Bell Award by the Mecklenburg Bar. Said
Robert Johnston,
Mecklenburg County's senior resident Superior Court judge,
"It is enough for her that things get done, that children
and families are free from domestic violence, that young
people get a second chance, that lives are turned around.
Mecklenburg County has benefited immeasurably from Jan's
contributions."
