ROTARY HAS
GOLF
ON THE BRAIN!
By: John Galles
Our formal ceremonies commenced with a uniformed color guard being
marched into our meeting escorted by two fine bagpipers. Rotarians
stood tall and watched four local agencies enter our midst as the
first ever aligned force of “First Responders” protecting our
quality of life in the City of Charlotte and the County of
Mecklenburg. Together, representatives of the Mecklenburg County
Sheriffs Department, the Mecklenburg County Medics, the Charlotte
Fire Department and Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department were
recognized for their support to this community. They attended as the
focus of our Rotary 9/11 Scholarship Tournament.
Committee Chair Chip Scholz was the first of two speakers turning
our attention to golf. Even though we are swamped with news of the
Wachovia PGA event and sightings of Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson,
Davis Love and V.J. Singh all about town, Chip announced the second
annual Rotary 9/11 Scholarship Tournament to be held at the Raintree
Country Club on Tuesday, September 21.
With able assistant Alan Adler, Mike Rash and Ron Kimble and a media
production just short of a preview to Ben Hur, Chip walked us
through the vision, mission, goals and objectives of this year’s
tournament. Organized to build a foundation that makes an
extraordinary impact on the lives of Mecklenburg County’s First
Responders and their families, this committee intends to develop one
of Charlotte’s premier golf events. Seeking sponsors and merchandise
for auction at this year’s event, Scholz, Rash and Kimble challenged
Rotarians to contribute and complete the forms on the table as well
as soliciting others to contribute. Their goal for this second event
is to raise $50,000 for scholarships to family members of First
Responders.
Then, Rotarian Scott Cottrill from Charlotte South was our second
speaker who reminded us about another incredible golf event
encouraging participation by Charlotte Rotarians. To be held May
17-22 right here in Charlotte, NC, the International Golfing
Fellowship of Rotarians will include Rotarians from across the world
flying into Charlotte and playing golf at area courses including
Providence Country Club, Carmel Country Club, Ballantyne Resort and
the TPC at Piper Glen. This tournament, previously held in Sun City,
South Africa and Portugal, is an opportunity to meet, mix and mingle
with important Rotary personalities from around the globe. District
Governor Bill Belk also commented on what a privilege and
opportunity it is to have this event here in Charlotte.
One of the highlights of this event is to have a participant from
another country visit with local Rotarians in their homes. Scott
alerted members that Herb Harris was looking for hosts for
tournament participants for meals in local homes. They need about
150 hosts!
Before winding to a close, President Tom recognized three Vocational
Service Committees for their work this year. Excellence in
Management, Classroom Central and Junior Achievement City are all
extremely valuable contributors to the mission of Rotary and in
service to the local community. With all those golf balls in the
air, the meeting was adjourned!
