PAUL
CAMERON
WBTV
By: Susan Hutchins
The first Rotary meeting this spring was highlighted by a
presentation from Paul Cameron, news anchor for WBTV. Paul has been
a Charlotte resident since 1981, having moved here from
Jacksonville, Florida where he worked for WJXT television as the
Sports Director. Paul has 28 years of experience in television
having begun with WJXT in 1976 as a sports reporter before moving to
Charlotte to join WBTV. He continued his career in sports journalism
with WBTV before being asked by the station to move to the anchor
chair when Bob Inman retired in 1996. Since that time he has focused
on news reporting.
Paul shared two of his favorite stories from the world of sports and
news. The first being the infamous defeat of Cumberland University
by Georgia Tech in 1916, which is on record as the worst defeat ever
in college football. Georgia Tech was coached by John Heisman at
that time, and the final score was 222 to 0. The death of common
sense was one of Paul’s favorite news stories, during which he
summarized many events of recent news that has led to the demise of
this most important attribute who’s survivors are “My Rights” and
“I’m a whiner”.
Turning his attention to his time in Charlotte, Paul indicated that
we are a competitive community, and he arrived when professional
sports was about to enter our City starting with George Shinn and
the NBA Hornets franchise. As Paul indicated, that franchise “begat
bigger and better things for Charlotte”, and led to the NFL Panthers
franchise and finally to the new NBA Bobcats franchise. As a
television Sports Director he was able to live his dream of having
professional teams come to his community rather than traveling
around the country to them. Paul discussed how Charlotte is a goal
oriented community and the importance for individuals to challenge
themselves by setting realistic goals and then raising the bar to
continue to achieve success. He also outlined three attributes of
successful people with appropriate examples from the world of
sports:
- Winning Attitude – Martina
Navratilova
- Motivation – Michael Jordon
- Keeping your commitments to
yourself and others – Larry Byrd

As Paul indicated he
doesn’t measure the success of a team solely on the wins and loses
or how much money they make but whether they possess heart, desire
and class. He then shared a wonderful definition of class that we
all can aspire to achieving.
As Paul indicated, he switched from sports broadcasting to news
anchor in 1996 and for the past eight years has covered the news. He
shared one of his most memorable news moments, which was his
opportunity to travel to Cuba to interview American troops who were
guarding the Taliban prisoners at Guantanamo Bay. He spoke vividly
of the conditions, and his admiration for the United States military
and the courage of the 19 and 20 year olds who are doing their duty
in service to our country.
Ken Samuelson announced the completion of the Rotary Habitat House
and the dedication, which is scheduled for Saturday, April 3rd at
10:00am. He thanked all the club members who worked on the house
with special appreciation to new member, Ed Peacock, who was
responsible for arranging lunch each workday.
