President Jim opened the meeting by having Tigger Alexander introduce guests and visiting Rotarians to the Club. Mac McCarley presented the Health and Happiness Report. Thomas Moore led us in song by playing various college fight songs and asking alumni to stand while the songs were played. Jamie Armstrong gave the invocation. The head table consisted of John Luby, Susan Patterson, Jamie Armstrong, Steve Landers, Bob Barber, and Ric Cannada.
Ric Cannada introduced our speaker Preston Parrish, Executive Vice President of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA). Preston began by telling everyone that the BGEA is moving its headquarters from Minneapolis, Minnesota, to Charlotte on April 1, 2002. Charlotte has been a great supporter of Billy Graham over the years, and they are looking forward to moving here. They have purchased a 63-acre tract on Billy Graham Parkway (where else could they be?) and will start construction soon.
Business matters for the ministry will be conducted here, in addition to film and literature distribution. BGEA conducts dozens of major crusades and evangelistic rallies in North America and around the world. BGEA has a daily radio broadcast, a magazine ("Decision"), and an internet site (BillyGraham.org). It plans to build a Billy Graham Museum on the 63-acre site.
Preston told us that it would be an economic boost to Charlotte as they are buying property, building an office, and transferring staff. He emphasized that this was not the only thing they were bringing to Charlotte. More importantly, they were bring Hope. He stated that the BGEA is dispensing hope all around the world. He said that hope can cure nearly everything and it does not disappoint!
Preston placed a complimentary copy of Billy Graham's book "Hope for the Troubled Heart" on the table for each Rotarian.
President Jim closed the meeting and reminded us that there will be no meeting next Tuesday due to the fact that the Annual Joint Meeting will be on Wednesday.
