Club members gathered Tuesday afternoon at SMS Catering in east Charlotte to hear the course for next year under the helmsmanship of UNCC Chancellor Jim Woodward.
In addition to a feast of barbecue pork and all the trimmings, prepared by members Bob and Robert Freeman, members enjoyed fellowship with iced tea, lemonade and a few brews thrown in for good measure.
President-elect Jim announced that Rotary International President Richard King's theme for the year is "Mankind Is Our Business." "We can all certainly relate to that," Jim said.
He announced that Bobby Smith of the Shelby club is District 7680 Governor this year. Our own Jim Barnhardt. one of the assistant lieutenant governors, will ably assist him.
Key officers of the Club this year will be David Anderson. president-elect; Erskine Harkey, secretary; and Catherine Browning, treasurer. The four avenues of service chairs will be John Tabor, Club Services; Theresa Evans, Vocational Services; David Zimmerman, International Services; and Jeannie Falknor, Community Services.
Rex Welton, who has done a superb job as membership chair this year, will again head that important committee in the coming year. He plans a big push early in the fall.
Tony Zeiss, program chair, said the Club will again have top-notch programs. First-quarter chair Marilynn Bowler said she has already scheduled several excellent speakers for the first three months.
Zeiss asked that those with ideas give them to him or quarterly chairs: Bowler; Darrell Stephens, second quarter; Bob Barber, third quarter; and Edgar Love, fourth quarter.
Evans announced that Erv Jackson would head the Excellence in Management award program this year. The program, she said, has garnered praise throughout Rotary circles.
David Zimmerman announced that Leland Park would join Don Haack as co-chair of the Rotary Foundation Committee. "Don has done such a great job in the past several years," David said, "that no one wants to follow him." The goal will still be to have a Paul Harris Club, one with all members at least Paul Harris Sustainers.
Reporting for Falknor, who could not be at the meeting, president-elect Jim said the Community Services committee would again be pushing the English as a Second Language program at the charter school on North Tryon Street near Sugar Creek Road. More than 125 students were served through the Central Piedmont Community College program there this year. Several Rotarians were involved.
Jim also offered special thanks to all the committee chairs for the coming year. "I didn't get a single turn-down," he said. "I think that's a clear indication of the superb group that this is."
He also noted that the Habitat project would become a regular part of the Club's budget that will top $325,000. He said he will also be working to assure that the Club has the technology and staff necessary to support its work. He praised the work Club secretary Claire Erb is doing.
"I thank you for giving me this opportunity to serve," Woodward said. "This is a wonderful group of Rotarians. I am especially pleased to be following my predecessor at UNCC, E. K. Fretwell. He set high standards."
President Don called the meeting to order and led the pledge of allegiance. Mary-Stuart Brooks gave the invocation.
When he was introduced. President Jim said with a laugh of President Don, who is walking with the assistance of a cane, "Don had a good back when his year began. I hope this Club and its members are not that big a burden."
