CLUB ASSEMBLY 2006
By Jill Santuccio

Outgoing President Herb Harriss expressed condolences about the passing of Paul Smith, a 49-year Rotarian who had 44 years of perfect attendance. Paul was a staunch supporter of everything Rotary, including the Rotary Foundation and many other programs.

He also recognized the heroism of Rotarian Todd Owens who was featured in the Observer for helping to save a drowning child's mother at the beach, and congratulated Leland Park on his upcoming retirement as librarian at Davidson College.

Incoming President Luther Moore announced key dates for the upcoming Rotary year, including the golf tournament on September 11, the annual Rotary Gala on February 20 and the annual end-of-year barbecue on June 26, 2007. There will be no meetings on July 4 or December 26 this Rotary year. He reflected on the recent international convention in Copenhagen and reminded the group that next year's convention will be in Salt Lake City, Utah, followed by Los Angeles in 2008 and Seoul, Korea in 2009.

Ed Wadsworth's son, Greg, introduced his fellow exchange student from Finland who shared his views of everything being so "big" in America. When Greg goes to Finland on the second half of the exchange, his host said he will find everything to be much smaller. He debunked the notion that Finland has a lot of icebergs, and proclaimed that the temperature actually does get up into the 80s.

Luther introduced various committee chairs for next year: Shannon Vaughn spoke about a dazzling array of programs, John Snyder previewed upcoming missions of the Interact Club, and Peggy Wesp discussed the GSE exchange to and from England. Elsie Garner showed off the "Telly" won in connection with the club's collaboration on the WWII documentary and shared upcoming plans for a second installment. Marilynn Bowler said that she and Natalie English would be "loud" about attracting 20-30 new members during the upcoming year and Alan Adler announced that we have gone from giving away four scholarships to 14 in the history of the golf tournament.

Many thanks to SMS Catering … Bob and Robert always put on a great spread!
