BOB
INMAN
The Story Teller
By George MacBain
Today, we had a visit from an old friend, Bob
Inman, former long time news anchor at WBTV. For those of us who
have called Charlotte home for a long time, it was nice to hear that
familiar voice we so fondly listened to for the day's big story!
Bob, a native Alabamian and Phi Beta Kappa graduate of The
University, had 2 successful stints at WBTV finishing his career in
1996 at age 51. He next turned to writing, his real love, working as
a Sunday columnist for 4 years with the Observer. He wrote articles
about his travels and the people he met along the way. It was during
this time Bob went into overdrive with his new career. He has
written 4 novels, Home Fires Burning, Old Dogs & Children, Dairy
Queen Days and Captain Saturday; written screenplays for 6
television motion pictures and 2 were Hallmark Hall of Fame
presentations; and he has written several plays debuting at the
Blowing Rock Stage Company.
He came today to tell us his secret of developing a story. He
grinned and told us you first look out a window, write what you are
thinking, stare some more and do this over and over. Finish it off
with an ending and send it to a publisher….simple huh?! Seriously,
Bob tells us every story is about people and you always need to have
your antenna up! He read us one of his favorites published in the
Observer titled "Guitar Man and the Lady from Frisco". This story
became the basis for his Holiday play known as "The Christmas Bus"
which debuted in Blowing Rock in 2003 and will be performed in
Charlotte this winter.
Bob is a very busy, energetic 62 year-old splitting time between
Charlotte and Blowing Rock. He is a work in process perfecting his
craft of reducing stories to books and plays. He loved his days as a
news anchor but would never return now that he has found his true
love of writing. This Walmart greeter wanna-be is living the dream
and treated us to a few good moments with our old friend, Bob Inman.

POWELL MAJORS
SCHOLARSHIP |
|
The Rotary Club of
Charlotte (through its tax-exempt donor-advised fund maintained
by the Rotary Foundation) is undertaking a joint effort with
Central Piedmont Community College ("CPCC") to establish a
scholarship fund in honor of Powell Majors, celebrating Powell's
100 years of exemplary life. As a former President of our Club
(1946-1947) and a regular attendee of our meetings for the past
66 years, Powell continues to set the pace for success in life
and service to others.
Powell has always placed service above self, and we want to
continue to honor that commitment by helping CPCC establish a
scholarship fund in Powell's name that will assist CPCC students
in financial need by helping them attain their educational and
career aspirations. The scholarship will serve as a lasting
tribute to a remarkable individual who has given much to our
community. Because of his years working to generate private
support for CPCC, Powell is pleased that the College's students
will be the beneficiaries of gifts in his honor.
If you would like to join us in this effort, please make your
generous contribution check payable as follows and return it to
Sandy Osborne, 841 Baxter St, Ste 118, Charlotte 28202 as soon
as possible:
"The Rotary Foundation DAF "
(Rotary Club #6006 in the Memo Section)
We will accumulate these contributions and direct that they be
sent to a specially created scholarship fund to be maintained by
CPCC. We ask that you join us in making a gift to Powell's
scholarship fund, with the intention to announce the fundraising
results on his birthday on December 12, 2006. |

Two organizations supported by Charlotte
Rotary made mention in the Observer: Crisis Assistance
Ministry (Carol Hughes)
benefited from a kitchen shower where supporters were asked
to bring items to help stock the ministry's storehouse.
Classroom Central (Karen Calder)
provided $2.38 million worth of school supplies to needy
students in Mecklenburg, Gaston and Cabarrus counties during
the 2005-2006 academic year.
þ
Thomas Moore's editorial
explains why everyone is responsible for the education,
nurturing, and being a cheerleader for all children of
Charlotte-Mecklenburg.
þ
Leland Park, library
director at Davidson College, is retiring July 1st. A
journal out of Washington sent a reporter to interview
Leland, who said Leland "is the weave of the Davidson
fabric," and refers to his uproarious laugh! Did you know
Leland's private bathroom, which is behind an unmarked door
off to one side of the cluttered office, is filed with
framed comic strips with library references, a temperance
pledge that once figured in a practical joke on a staff
member, and an amateurish sketch, done by a long-ago
student? The article provides wonderful insight of an
absolute legend that will be missed around the ole campus.
þ
Jim Adams will have a
heart procedure on Thursday. |
