HOW I GOT WHERE I’M AT
By: Leigh Derby
Fred Brown has enjoyed two careers, military service and health care. Born
and raised in Statesville, Fred attended Duke University where he played
football. He returned to be closer to home due to his father’s illness and
graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College. (Fred later received a graduate degree
from UNC Chapel Hill.) That same year, Fred was drafted – “the same year
that Bill Clinton was not.” – and shipped off to Fort Benning for officer
candidate school. Subsequently, Fred served in several Airborne Divisions.
After his Army experience, Fred trained as a hospital administrator at
Charlotte Memorial Hospital and, at age 26, became the administrator of a
small hospital in Siler City. Fred noted that he had a famous neighbor,
Francis Bavier who played Aunt Bea on the Andy Griffith Show. Later, Fred
became the Operating Officer at Pitt Memorial/East Carolina University where
he met Rotarian Phil Van Hoy – a major reason he joined Charlotte Rotary.
Fred returned to the area to join Novant Health and has spent the past 2½
years as a Health Care Consultant. Fred continued his military service in
the Army Guard where he served 27 years as an officer including service in
Panama, Haiti, Somalia, and the Persian Gulf. He closed with a “commercial”,
a plea for employers to support Guard and Reserve participants.
Now the President of CEO Inc., Debby Millhouse was born in San Diego,
California and started her career “in lighting” in the Inland Empire. Her
first job was a hostess for a firm that sold lighting. She quickly grew and
was strategic in growing that business from a small retail firm, to the
largest builder supplier of lighting in the Inland Empire. She saw the same
success when she switched industries and moved into the party goods and
rentals industry. Debby tired of the retail business and entered the home
building industry. She soon became one of the first females to hold a
strategic position in that area building and developing over 400 homes a
year in the Moreno Valley and High Desert area of California. In 1992, Debby
followed her husband to Charlotte. After working on projects for Ernst &
Young, she was recruited to search, “picking up the phone and dialing for
dollars”. Three and a half years later, Debby joined CEO Inc, a full service
search, staffing, and human capital solutions firm. CEO Inc. has enjoyed
double-digit growth every year but one since 1996. She can light up your
life, throw you a party, build you a home and get you a job. Debby has been
married for 18 years to Brian and they have two children Ben (10) and Kate
(6).
David Lewis has been a banker for more than 20 years. He has had many bosses
and assignments, but the present assignment at Bank of America is “the
best”. For the past 18 months, David has been privileged to lead a group of
65 associates in Credit Review, an internal Quality Control function. “We do
not approve the loans, we look over the health of the credit portfolios and
measure the quality business flowing into the portfolio.” David has been
married for 18 years to Beth of Richmond, VA. “We have two wonderful kids
(daughters) – so wonderful we can’t wait for school to start again.” The
Lewis family are members of St. John’s Baptist Church, a growing contingency
within Charlotte Rotary and a group of families that have grown up together
over the past 15 years or so. Community service includes his role as a
Trustee of CPCC. David recognized Rotarians Tony Zeiss, Marilynn Bowler, and
Brenda Lea for their leadership in workforce development and driving CPCC to
national prominence. David concluded with kind words for Darrell Holland,
“the St. John’s and the Raleigh Connection”, and appreciation for his roll
in leading him to join the Charlotte Rotary.
Tim Hunt grew up in Durham, NC, where his father owned a construction
company for 20 years. After seven summers, Tim decided he had enough of
construction. He attended UNC-Charlotte on an Air Force ROTC scholarship and
graduated in 1991. The following year, Tim married Jennifer Matthews at
Carmel Baptist Church and they remain members today. Upon graduation, Tim
spent 5 years in the Air Force, 6 months in California and 4½ years in
Minot, North Dakota (“…that felt like dog years – 28…”) as a Nuclear Missile
Launch Officer, then resigning as a Captain. While in service, Tim earned a
MBA from Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, which helped prepare him for
his career in the financial industry. In 1996, Tim joined Consolidated
Planning, a regional financial planning firm that specializes in providing
financial information and knowledge for business owners and individuals.
Tim’s hobbies include golf, UNC Charlotte Basketball, Civil War, playing
with his children, Bradley (4) and Olivia (1). He holds three things dear,
faith, family and friends – in that order.

Kelly Pharr was born in Charlotte Memorial Hospital in 1970. He attended
Appalachian State University in Boone, where he was a marketing major, and
no doubt spent a great deal of time skiing. In fact, while skiing with his
family in Colorado, he noticed that the ski lift attendants seemed to be
having fun and quickly formed a career goal. Upon graduation in 1993, Kelly
became a “professional ski bum”. He selected a place to start his career by
picking Jackson Hole because it was only a couple of miles from Kelly,
Wyoming. Two years later, Kelly returned to Charlotte with “no idea what to
do” and through a connection with a family friend became a financial planner
with Greater Carolina Group and later worked for a small hedge fund where he
was a proprietary equities trader. In 2001, Kelly joined Morgan Stanley at Morocroft and was scheduled to attend group training on September 10 . . .
at the World Trade Center. He arranged to attend at a later date due to a
family conflict. Kelly noted that the Morgan Stanley group all made it out
alive, a tribute to the company’s evacuation plans. Kelly is now a Financial
Advisor with Merrill Lynch’s Private Client Group. Closing, Kelly recognized
John Snyder for inviting him to Rotary and affectionately mentioned his best
friend and wife, Summer Brown Pharr of Augusta, GA and son, Davis Alexander.
Kelly and his family live in Davidson and attend Davidson College
Presbyterian Church.
