"Never in the field of human conflict has so much been owed by so
many to so few."
--Winston Churchill
by Mike Butler
It was a moving and
nostalgic day as the Charlotte Rotary Club remembered World War II
Tuesday.
David Anderson introduced the program - "World War II Oral History
Archives and Television Documentaries." He was joined at the podium
by Richard Bailey and Tom Burgess. Rotary's centennial project, the
World War II Oral History is the largest project in the history of
our club. It consists of 122 video interviews with men and women who
served in the military and on the home front during the war years.
The project spans the terms of three club presidents, beginning with
the administration of David Anderson, continuing under President Tom
Robertson and concluding during the Centennial Year Presidency of
Catherine Browning. It will be formally unveiled on Veteran's Day,
November 11.
Richard Bailey said the video project "makes history books come
alive" and will be a valuable resource to students now and in the
future.
In a moving tribute, Tom Burgess presented a DVD set of the
interviews to Martin Waters, a World War II veteran who was aboard
the U. S. cruiser Indianapolis which was sunk by enemy troops 60
years ago while transporting atomic bomb parts to the Philippines.
Tom also presented sets of the 62 DVDs to representatives of area
educational institutions who attended Tuesday's meeting. These
included Central Piedmont Community College, Belmont Abbey College,
Davidson University, Gaston Community College, Johnson C. Smith,
Queens University, Wingate University, UNC Charlotte,
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library, Charlotte Museum of History, Levine
Museum of the South and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.
Elsie Garner introduced members of the WTVI production team who have
spent more than 400 hours producing the documentary with more to go.
We extend our thanks to WTVI for an outstanding job and to our club
members who have made this enduring project a reality.
If you would like to support completion of this project financially,
please contact the Rotary office.

ON-LINE ROSTER
AVAILABLE
THROUGH DISTRICT WEBSITE |
|
District 7680 has kicked off a new
database that club members are encouraged to use. This new
system will do many things, but one important feature for all
Rotarians is that it provides an on-line directory. To go into
the site, enter
www.dacdb.com and select
District 7680 on the left hand side. You will be taken to the
log-in screen, where you'll enter your email address and RI
member number (which is your password). An easy place to find
your RI member number is on the mailing label of The Rotarian
magazine. If you can't find it, call or email the Rotary Office
for assistance. Once in, you will see several tabs which contain
access to lots of things. Click on Clubs, and then view my club,
for a listing of members of Charlotte Rotary. Click on Members,
and then view my data, to update your profile. Basic information
on club members was loaded into the database from the start. As
time permits, Sandy is working to update additional details such
as email address, employment, and contact telephone numbers. A
tip on 'viewing the club' tab - you immediately see contact
information for the officers, then will scroll down to the
member info. It takes a couple seconds for the membership to
load, so be patient. Give it a try! |

The Rotary Office
has just received word that Dr. Meg
Hutchins, daughter of
Tom and Peg Hutchins, passed away on Tuesday
following a long bout with cancer. Tom and Peg have been in
Illinois with Meg for the last few weeks.
þ
It was good to have
Thomas Moore return to the club following the
death of his father a couple weeks ago.
þ
Mac Jackson suffered a
stroke last week and will receive therapy at Mercy Hospital
for another couple weeks. Mac's biggest concern at this
point is how he'll maintain his perfect attendance at Rotary
- and has already received permission from his doctor to be
excused from the hospital for an hour to do a make up. As
Randall Groves said during
Health & Happiness - THAT'S LEADERSHIP! The best to you,
Mac.
þ
Regina Patton was
introduced as the first new member of this Rotary year.
Regina is a Partner with Management inSites, an

Lowrance, Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein, will

þ
Peggy Wesp has resigned
from Charlotte Sister Cities. She plans to take a break from
the corporate world until the Fall. For now, she plans to
stay busy working in the garden and enjoying life on the
lake.
þ
A couple Lady
Rotarians were recipients of the Charlotte Business
Journal's ninth annual Women In Business Award.
Congratulations to Cynthia Marshall
