Marty Hurney, Carolina Panthers

Grabbing our attention by referring to the popular football film “Remember The Titans”, and making us chuckle with his wry humor, Carolina Panthers General Manager Marty Hurney spoke in detail of “the plan”, which is the theme that both Panthers management and team hope will translate to an NFL championship.

Marty joined the panthers in 1998 from the San Diego Chargers to handle salary cap matters under head coach Dom Capers and George Seifert.  In his new role as General Manager, Marty will use the skills honed under coaches Joe Gibbs and Bobby Ross to oversee the coaching, personnel and salary cap areas in an effort to coordinate all three departments into a smooth-running machine.

Referencing several times to “the plan” for the 2002-2003 NFL season, Marty identified the recipe for victory---Communicate, Be Patient, Trust Each Other, and Refuse To Fail.  He stressed that individuals don’t win; TEAMS win.  All members of the organization must be on the same page, and that is achieved only through communication between coaches, management and players.  Patience, he explained, is difficult in the NFL.  Coaches typically wish for a three-year agenda, wanting to build a team to a winning season within three years.  Trust in each other and belief in each other as members of the same team, are equal in importance.  And finally, enthusiasm and refusal to fail complete the recipe for winning: KNOW you can win, rather than just HOPE you can win.

With the right people like Marty Hurney, head coach John Fox, and the entire coaching staff working with well-rounded veterans and exciting rookies, Panthers fans are planning now for the post-season.

CLUB EDUCATION
In 1988, Rotary International and its partners launched an initiative to eradicate Polio from the world, which has resulted in a 99% decrease of this dreaded disease worldwide.  The remaining nations awaiting immunization are Afghanistan, India, Niger, Nigeria, and Pakistan, where 85% of 2001 cases occurred; and Angola, Egypt, Ethiopia, Somalia and Sudan with 15% of the cases.  Rotary has committed to an $80 million fund raising campaign to help close the gap on eradication by 2005, Rotary’s centennial year.  Within the next few weeks, we will hear more about this tremendous effort and how our club can play a vital role in making this goal a reality.

POWELL'S
OBSERVATIONS

POWELL MAJORS

POWELL  MAJORS

Tony Zeiss made news on three items of late. His picture was on the front of “Charlotte Biz,” with a long article on the struggle CPCC has to keep the gateway of opportunity open. An article in the “Business Journal” tells of the $42 million in needs not funded by the State or County, and how he, along with Brenda Lea, CPCC Foundation Director, are planning a capital campaign. His first novel “Journey to Cherry Mansion” has been drafted into a screenplay.  He is working on his second novel titled “Reunion at Gettysburg”.

Jerry Orr is at odds with the “Feds” on airport security.  He is in favor of safety, but against wasteful spending.

Marilynn Bowler is now chief of public and community affairs for the Charlotte Checkers of the East Coast Hockey League.
