ART
GALLAGHER
President, Charlotte Campus
JOHNSON AND WALES UNIVERSITY
By: Suzanne Fetscher
Katie Tyler introduced our speaker, Art Gallagher, President
of the Charlotte Campus of Johnson and Wales University. Johnson and Wales
University will combine its two campuses in Norfolk, Virginia, and
Charleston, South Carolina, into a single new Charlotte campus located in
the Gateway Village area of downtown. The relocation of Johnson and Wales to
Charlotte was acknowledged to be one of the most exciting recent
developments for the city. Art stated that Charlotte leaders, with their
“can do spirit,” did an amazing job of luring Johnson and Wales to the Queen
City. Johnson and Wales had planned on expanding its Charleston campus, said
Gallagher. But the Charlotte contingent, led by Center City Partners, asked
for thirty days to convince them to invest in Charlotte instead. And they
succeeded. The first students arrive in the fall of 2004.
Art told the Rotary audience to get ready for the influx of kids with green
hair, cell phones, sandals, and knapsacks. Soon they will be populating the
downtown. An attendance of 885 students is anticipated for the fall of 2004,
with the optimum number of 2800 students reached by 2007; add to them about
250 faculty and staff.
Johnson and Wales University was founded in 1914 in Providence, Rhode
Island, by two women. The Providence campus remains its main campus. When
the Norfolk and Charleston campuses are combined into Charlotte’s campus, it
will be one of the four campuses that include Denver, Colorado and North
Miami, Florida. It is a four year accredited university.
Johnson and Wales has three colleges of study: business, hospitality (which
includes hotel, sports events, and events management), and culinary. The
culinary school is the largest educator of the culinary arts in the world.
Art described the curriculum at Johnson and Wales as being “upside down.” He
went on to explain this by stating that students start taking courses in
their major area of study the first day of school. In the culinary school,
one may see students on their first day in their uniforms and in the
kitchen. In hospitality, students will immediately take courses in lodging
management. Art told the group that the curriculum of Johnson and Wales is
“employer designed.” The University sees its customers as the industry
employers and its clients as the students. The University is attempting to
provide for the needs of the industry so that graduating students have the
skills to serve well the industry. Johnson and Wales boasts a 98% placement
success of its students within 60 days of their graduation. When the
University is at full capacity in 2007, it will have an annual $60 million
economic impact upon the Charlotte region.

| www.rotaryeclubone.org is
a web site you’ll want to mark for quick access. Chartered January
2002 as Rotary’s first internet-based club, Rotary eClub One of
District 5450 exists to serve Rotarians with special needs, including
those who cannot maintain attendance at regular club meetings because
of extensive business commitments and travel, health problems, or
geographical isolation from existing clubs. The make-up component,
which eClub has designated as its international service project, began
in February 2002 and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Members must read one of five informational programs linked to the
site then complete the make-up form. The form asks the guest to
discuss the information, including how it might relate to his/her home
club’s activities, and to suggest topics for future make-up programs.
Both Joe Penner and Darrel Stephens have used the site. |
