CHANGING OF THE GUARD
By George MacBain

Today, we heard Herb Harriss address us for the last time as President of The Rotary Club of Charlotte. He has accomplished a lot during his year as President and our club is the better for having had his leadership. He was quick to want to thank everyone individually for a great year and particularly his wife Karen, his team of committee leaders and Sandy Osborne. Herb mentioned just 2 of the year's many accomplishments he is proud of including our club winning the Gold Club award for the year and our members contributing $61,996.07 to the Rotary Foundation….both outstanding achievements! He mentioned this having been one of the best years of his life!

Charlie Williams then pinned the Presidents pin on Luther Moore, whom he sponsored in 1998.

Luther quickly pinned the Past Presidents pin on Herb to a resounding ovation, and invited Herb to loosen his tie (which he did). The pin did not drop into a coffee cup this time! Herb opened his gift, a new Palm Pilot.

Luther shared with the club that he had attended the RI convention in Copenhagen and new RI President Bill Boyd coined "Lead the Way" as Rotary's theme for 2006-07. Luther agrees with Boyd's message and read the following from Boyd's speech at Copenhagen:

"As we embark on a new Rotary year, we look ahead to new responsibilities, new challenges, and new opportunities. Rotary has flourished for so long because it offers constant values to its members: fellowship, friendship, and doing good work in the world. And Rotary has been welcomed into new communities and new countries because it is not afraid to adapt and respond, to embrace different cultures, and to hold firm to its core principles of honesty, tolerance, and unselfishness. While the mission and motto of Rotary remain constant, we must always be open to the need for change. Part of our ongoing task as Rotarians is to stay aware of needs - in our own organization and in the community we serve. Our membership is evolving, and we are welcoming more and more new members who, a decade ago, would never have thought to join Rotary. Our work is evolving, just as our community needs and our ability to address them are. In a world where so much is in flux and so little can be predicted with certainty, Rotary cannot afford complacency. Challenges are constant; so are opportunities. Today, we need every Rotarian more than ever, because in our diversity lies our strength.

In the coming Rotary year, I ask all of you to join me as we Lead the Way to a better Rotary and better community. By this, I mean to ask you to be leaders in your community - to show others that solid integrity, concern for others, and generosity of spirit are ageless values and that good business does not preclude good ethics.

As Rotarians, we are not content to let matters stay the way they have always been, whether in our clubs or in our community. We are the ones who ask, Why not us? We are the ones with the skills and the desires to build a better future. And we are the ones who must Lead the Way."

Luther then challenged members to: (1) bring in a new member this year to keep growth and diversity alive in our club; (2) make this the best year you can; (3) and go out and add value to our world. He closed by reading aloud the Object of Rotary.

OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND. High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and the dignifying of each Rotarian's occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian's personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH. The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

þ Kit Cramer has been named vice president of economic development at the Charlotte Chamber. The new job coupled with husband, Mark's, recuperation from by-pass surgery, prompted Kit's resignation from the CMS school board; Mark Pierman, CEO of United Family Service, was delighted with the Men for Change fundraising breakfast last month. Attendees made a group pledge for each man to take a leadership role in voicing the message that domestic violence is unacceptable in our community; David Erdman has given his "Geography of Charlotte" presentation throughout the Queen City, and fellow club members will get a chance to hear David when he addresses the club on August 1st; Alan Adler's article, "Upgrading biz processes can uncover a gold mine" is in this week's Business Journal; Rob Wright had a hole-in-one at Charlotte Country Club on May 27th; Lee Morris is looking forward to a two week vacation in Germany and Russia; Jerri, Eddie, and William Haigler, Pender McElroy, Gregg Walker, and Bob Brietz helped serve more than 100 meals to residents at Charlotte Rescue Mission. Thanks to Tony Marciano for making this service opportunity known, and to these Rotarians as they Lead The Way for others to serve the Mission; Richard Bailey has had several members ask about giving a set of the WW II Oral History Archives to their college or university. The cost per set is $450, and includes 123 interviews (and index) on 63 CDs. Contact Richard if you have additional questions.

þ Rotary Scholarship Golf Classic: the record needs to be corrected on an earlier statement regarding the hole-in-one contest. AmWinns Brokerage of the Carolinas will sponsor a hole-in-one contest, which carries a $10,000 cash award for the FIRST person making a hole-in-one on the 9th tee (not to anyone sinking the ball on the 9th tee). Thanks to John Armistead for arranging this sponsorship. Raffle and auction items are needed, as well as stuffers for 175 goody bags.

þ Foundation Chair Pender McElroy recognized Elsie Garner and George Wilson for achieving Paul Harris Fellow, and gave a brief update on work being done in Alto Cayma, Arequipa, Peru. Assistant Governor David Anderson will provide further information on this service opportunity in upcoming weeks.
