HERBERT L. HARRISS
President 2005-2006
89th President
of the Rotary Club of Charlotte
by Bob Barber
President
Catherine opened her final meeting and turned the microphone over to
Chip Scholz and Alan Adler for a brief program regarding the 3rd
Annual Rotary Scholarship Golf Classic. Joe Penner, of Medic, gave a
few words on the role of Medic in the emergency community and how
important the Rotary scholarships are to members of the emergency
committee. Chip Scholz then conducted auctions for rights to play in
a foursome with either Derek Wilkinson, Head Coach and General
Manager of the Charlotte Checkers, or Delano Little, Sports Director
for WBTV. This year's tournament is scheduled for Monday, September
26th at the newly renovated course at the Cedarwood Golf Club.
President Catherine introduced about a dozen past presidents of the
club and reviewed the results of the club's member survey and
particularly Tom Robertson's breakfast meetings to educate new
members. She also thanked Sandy Osborne, our Office Manager. The
club responded with a standing ovation for Sandy. Catherine
summarized some of the challenges the Board has levied on Herb
Harriss and his team for the next year, including promotion of
wearing of the Rotary pin, having a place for members to display
their company information, having members as speakers, and including
new members at the head table. She thanked a number of members for
their various contributions during the year and recognized the
Board, the Avenue Chairs, and Committee Chairs. She gave a special
thank you to Harriman Jett for his development of the club's use of
its new video equipment. Harriman was awarded the Outstanding New
Member Award.
Catherine turned over the "big gavel" to Herb to help him control
the club meetings and Powell Majors, club president in 1946-47,
placed the president's pin on Herb and the past president's pin on
Catherine. Herb presented Catherine with a beautiful bracelet and
his thanks for her leadership.
New President Herb introduced his wife, Karen, and special guests
Bill McMillan, past president of the Rotary Club of Charlotte West,
Forest Pierce, also past president of the Rotary Club of Charlotte
West, and Tony Grimes, of Jacksonville, Florida.
Herb reported on what he had learned about Rotary at the Centennial
International Convention in Chicago: Rotarians like to have fun (ask
him about the origins of the 4-Way Test), that Rotary is very
international, and that Rotary is about service. He pledged an
active and busy year around those themes and adjourned the meeting.
Head Table:
Ronnie Pruett, Martin Waters, Catherine Browning, Herb Harriss,
Powell Majors, Jim Woodward, David Anderson
Visitors &
Guests:
Invocation: Tom Robertson; Visitors & Guests: Jeff Searcy; Health &
Happiness: David Anderson; Song: Gregg Walker; Piano: Thomas Moore

IN MEMORIAM
GORDON J. H. BERG
January 14, 1913 - July 2, 2005 |
|
Gordon Berg, a forty-seven year
member of the Rotary Club of Charlotte, passed away July 2, 2005
at Carolinas Medical Center. Mr. Berg was the son of Norwegian
immigrants and grew up in Minneapolis and parts of Minnesota
where he loved hunting and fishing and saw the last of the
frontier. He experienced the effects of the Great Depression
first hand, which had a lasting impact on his career in social
work. Gordon and wife Dorothy moved to Charlotte in the
mid-1950s when the United Appeal (now United Way of Central
Carolinas) was in trouble. His leadership resulted in the agency
making its goal and when Gordon retired in 1978, he had raised
more than $46 million. At sixty-five, he took over the infant
Foundation for the Carolinas, which had just half a million
dollars in assets. The foundation boasted more than $20 million
in assets when he left. Berg played behind the scenes in
Charlotte and shied from the spotlight. He preferred others to
take the gavel in meetings and peeked from the back rows and
shunned head tables. He often asked…"Doing anything for humanity
today?" Gordon is survived by his wife, Dorothy; son Doug of
Pittsboro; daughter Barbara of Hammond, Ws; four grandchildren
and eight great-children. |

upon the death of Jim's father, Mr. Walter Webb Kiser, on
July 4, 2005.

Tom and Barbara
Robertson will celebrate their 50th wedding
anniversary on July 9th. In honor of this event, their sons
have established the 'Barbara and Tom Robertson Fund' to
support educational initiatives at Hawthorne Lane United
Methodist Church, the church they've attended throughout
their married life.
þ
Another fine
Rotarian is resigning from the club.
Rufus Allison, who joined
the club in 1954, says resigning is certainly not an easy
thing to do, but he has reached the point where he doesn't
believe he can reasonably make contribution to the club and
its activities. We wish you the best Rufus, and invite you
to visit when you are able.

While on vacation
and doing a make-up in Tampa, Florida,
Elsie Garner was awarded a
box of cigars as the prize for having traveled the farthest.
þ
Bob Culbertson has a young
friend who's in need of a summer job. About eight years ago,
Bob introduced an exceptional, though underprivileged young
man to the club. Since then, this now 18 year-old has been
awarded a scholarship to attend Belmont Abbey College. He
does not have a car, but Bob assures you he will be an
outstanding worker and will do whatever task he is given. If
you would like additional information or may have something
in mind, contact Bob at 704-334-2700, extension 303 or by
