CHIP
SCHOLZ
Scholz and Associates
By: Christie Taylor
The parking lot was icy and empty but our minds were warm and full
thanks to fellow Rotarian, Chip Scholz’s stimulating presentation.
President Tom introduced Henry E. “Chip” Scholz of Scholz &
Associates, a leadership development firm in Cornelius, North
Carolina. Chip began his remarks with the benefits of snowy days… a
chance to stay home, sit by the fire, time to catch-up and reflect.
And, with reflection in mind, Chip challenged the group to focus on
six questions that could change our lives.
Question 1:
Do I like what I am doing? What do I want to do? |
| |
Nothing is work
unless you would rather be doing something else.
|
Question 2:
Can I do what I want to do? |
| |
Find something you
would like to do so much you would gladly do it for nothing.
Then, do it so well that people are glad to pay you for it.
|
Question 3:
Do I know WHY I want to do what I want to do? |
| |
Do you know your
purpose in life? Are you doing things intentionally or do you
just let things happen?
|
Question 4:
Do I know what to do so I can do what I want to do? |
| |
Before you play the
game, you must have a game plan.
|
Question 5:
Do I know people that do what I want to do? |
| |
People are your best
resource: find them and learn from them.
|
Question 6:
Will I pay the price to do what I want to do? |
| |
There are three
kinds of people: 1) people who won’t pay the price; 2 )people
who will pay the price once and 3) people who pay every day and
they are fulfilled.
|
And the
final question:
What will it be like when I get to do what I want to do? |
| |
If you are not doing
what you want to do, you have no basis of comparison. But you
can count on…
It will be different than you imagined
It will be harder than you imagined
It will be better than you imagined. |

Charlotte is 771 miles from Mary’s hometown of Clyde, New York
and it took thirty-four years to get here. After graduation from
Buffalo State, Mary taught for thirteen years in Kenmore, New
York before moving to Charlotte for her husband’s job. The move
gave her a taste of adventure and she decided to explore the
idea of changing careers. Having already volunteered for Public
Television in Buffalo, Mary joined the WTVI team and started the
on-air auctions. Since November 1, 1995, Mary has worked with
area non-profits helping with their fundraising, marketing and
public relations. Having her own business allows more time to
volunteer, with current projects involving Friendship Trays and
Matthews Women’s Club. Ron and Mary live with Mary’s mom and
cat. Ron’s daughters and grandchildren are in Ohio, which allows
travel up north several times a year. Mary admits both are
terrible at gardening but love to travel, read and play golf.
