Report |
January 12, 1999 |
| The meeting was called to order by acting
president Ken Harris. At the head table with him were Mac
McCarley, Ervin Jackson, Pam Syfert, Charlie Briley and Bob Culbertson. In all, 11 guests of Rotarians and four members from other clubs were introduced. Announcements included word of Tom Warren's dismissal from the hospital and E. K. Fretwell returned for a cameo appearance. Don Steger's health and happiness report was about a C+ at best. Pledge and song was another C-. David Pleisson of JAARS gave a report based on our response to the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch. Thousands were killed, bridges were washed out, roads were lost. Our club donated $2700 toward relief and David came to thank us. Paul Harris awards went to Carroll Thomas, John Boatwright, John Barnhardt, Leland Park, Jim Evans, John Johnson, Bobby Cockerham and Ed Ruff. We learned more about Mayor Pat McCrory's background from Bob Culbertson's introduction: early dog days in Greensboro through dukedom (1978), presidenting over most everything he touched, it seems. The mayor included evidence of Charlotte's phenomenal growth and dusted off the cliche: to succeed a city must adapt to change. He listed at least 10 signs of growth/ flexibility/change. 1. billboards restricted in residential areas 2. a new sidewalk policy 3. security steps (300 policemen added) 4. computers in all police cars 5. photos at speed intersections 6. transportation following a 25-year plan with traffic alternatives 7. airport plan calls for a third major landing strip 8. Mayor's Alliance uses the strength of 600 mentor-volunteers 9. industry-snatching lures from nearby towns offer better incentives 10. Washington good contacts will have to be renewed A lot remains to be done. The good news is we recognize all this. Corrective steps include the first N.C. Speaker of the House from Charlotte (Jim Black). And education is on a plan. Work on two major highways (connector at First Union Customer Services Center, and Providence and Hwy. 485 loop) have been stopped by Washington until we meet environmental goals. * * * REGRETFUL RESIGNATIONS Gregory F.
