MICHAEL
TARWATER
Speaks to Charlotte Rotary
By Matt Joyner
Apple or donut?
Michael C. Tarwater, President and CEO of
Carolinas Healthcare System ("CHS") is posing this question to his
employees, the local public, and, now, to Charlotte Rotary. Natalie
English introduced Tarwater, a 24 year veteran of CHS, the largest
healthcare system in North Carolina with 4,300 beds.
The apple/donut question is part of CHS' new preventative health
awareness multimedia campaign called "LiveWELL Carolinas!," an
initiative according to Tarwater with an ultimate goal "to change
human behavior on a massive scale." With the American healthcare
system already in crisis and the aging of the Baby Boomer generation
threatening to push it over the brink, LiveWell Carolinas! is
designed to attack the problems of healthcare costs and utilization
rates where they begin - with the individual's maintenance of their
own health through diet, exercise, quitting smoking and moderating
alcohol consumption.
CHS intends to succeed in Charlotte first and export the model to
other markets. Believing that "healthy living begins at home," CHS
has begun the implementation of LiveWELL Carolinas! in its own
workplace. In December, 2005 the program of physical exercise and
weight management was announced to all CHS employees and was fully
subscribed within 45 minutes. The results to date? In one month the
228 program participants lost a combined total of more than half a
ton of body fat! Readers of the Charlotte Observer can track the
ongoing progress of three CHS employees as they make their way
through the program.
Other aspects of the LiveWELL Carolinas! program include a website
dedicated to the issue of wellness (www.carolinas.org/livewell) and
the hiring of Dr. Jessica Schorr Saxe in the newly created position
of Medical Director of Prevention and Community Wellness. Dr. Schorr
Saxe will be cultivating partnerships between CHS and schools,
social service agencies and community-based health organizations.
One particularly significant related initiative is CHS' fight
against childhood obesity - an alarming current trend fueling the
increase in Type 2 diabetes and catastrophic illnesses at middle
age. With a cut in physical education classes in school and outdoor
play time at home, an increase in junk food consumption and a
sedentary lifestyle of computers and video games, today's kids are
increasingly unhealthy and, in a word, fat. So fat in fact that the
current generation of American children may well be the first
generation in the history of the country that has a lower life
expectancy than their parents' generation - a sobering prospect
indeed.
So, Charlotte Rotary, apple or donut?
