How I Got Where I’m At

John Granzow led off the most recent round of presentations on How I Got Where I’m At.  John just celebrated his 15th year of marriage to his wife, Linda. They have two children.  In discussing how John got to where he is right now, he interviewed his children and his wife. His daughter said John is the boss and he likes to read, run and play soccer. His son said he is the best daddy and is good at games and soccer.  His wife, Linda, mentioned that John loves to run (John reported that he has run in nine marathons), loves sweets and is direct.  John pointed out two individuals who helped him in recent years –Lyttleton Rich, a partner with Sockwell and Associates, an executive recruiting firm, recruited him to his present work. Ann Depta, an executive coach, helped him become more effective at what he does.   John closed with words of wisdom from a book about Eleanor Roosevelt by Robin Gerber. He referenced six lessons learned: reflect and learn from the past, choose a mentor, tackle crisis head on, find your passion, speak up and embrace risk.
Jonathan Pullin was brief and to the point. Jon is a scientist who has a Bachelors degree in environmental engineering.  He is from Brooklyn and has a Graduate degree from UNC at Chapel Hill.  He has been married to his wife for twelve years and they have two children, one is ten years old and the other is ten months old.  He is thankful to Hal Bouton for sponsoring him as a member of Rotary.
Matt Joyner is an example of opportunity meeting up with a lack of career guidance.  He presented four themes in discussing how he got where he is at. Physically, he spent time in Denmark, graduated from Dartmouth College and received a law degree from the University of Pennsylvania.  Metaphysically, he is a Christian who joined Myers Park Methodist Church in 1987.   Domestically, he has been married for ten years and has three children, ages six, four, and two.  He married the sister of a colleague at work, after the colleague pestered him for seven years to ask her sister out on a date. He finally asked the sister out and a year later they were married. Occupationally, he is the general counsel for Yorkshire Inc, a textile dye company.
Jon Barton was born in Charlotte when the city was so small that, as a school crossing guard, he could stop traffic on Sharon Amity by stepping out into the street with a school flag.  He met his wife, Cathy, when she was 25 years old. Over the next six years, she would date him and break up with him numerous times.  Finally, they were married and have two daughters.  He has worked in industrial sales for 20 years. Over his wild and rebellious life, he has had a lot of breaks but he would still consider himself a project to be worked on.
Guests and Visitors: Gene Bratek; Health and Happiness: Russell Ranson; Song: David Erdman; Invocation: Tom Robertson.
Head Table: Randy Minter, Matt Joyner, Frank Timberlake, John Granzow, David Anderson, Jon Barton, Jonathan Pullin.
