SHANNON McFAYDEN
Wachovia
Business Strengthening America

By: Rick Jackson

With her opening remark of, "...this feels comfortable - I'm right at home," Shannon got off to a great start by remarking on her experiences as a young lady who attended Rotary with her dad on "Father - Daughter Day." Charlotte Rotary received an inspired and educational message from Shannon about volunteerism and community involvement. As Co-Chair of the Business Strengthening America Program for Wachovia, Shannon shared her experiences of the past two years. Shannon detailed the George W. Bush initiative which calls on all Americans to commit at least 4,000 hours or 2 years of the remainder of our lives to the service of our neighbors and our nation. His request is a continuation of George Sr.'s "Point of Light" campaign. George W. asked 18 prominent CEO's how and why they encourage a culture of community involvement and volunteerism. In general, their response was a business must do well financially and it must also be a good citizen, volunteerism builds teamwork through a sense of passion and volunteering builds a strong sense of company pride.

Wachovia responded to the challenge by developing the "Business Strengthening America Program," (BSA) whose purpose is to:

  • Promote a non-partisan campaign to increase the culture of service in our country.
  • Focus business resources to support a service culture.
  • Strengthen society and local communities through volunteerism.
The campaign goals of the program include (1) Increasing the number of businesses that engage in volunteerism; (2) Increase volunteer effectiveness; and (3) Build a business model that illustrates the benefit to the community and the business.

Shannon went on to explain that the program "sunsets" after three years, explaining that, "the last thing this country needs is another non-profit." Halfway through the campaign, she illustrated their accomplishments saying the program had grown from 18 to nearly 800 members, and that 5.2 million employers are involved with BSA, representing nearly 42% of all employees at their respective companies.

During the Q&A session, she remarked that Wachovia CEO, Ken Thompson had been interviewed about the program and asked how he has managed to get his employee's involved. His response, "I don't have to do anything. To the contrary, I've found that people want to volunteer and I simply get out of their way. It is in the American DNA." With registration materials available at each table, Shannon thanked Charlotte Rotary for the opportunity to speak and concluded by encouraging members to get involved today.
