JOE
MORRIS
District Governor
challenges Charlotte Rotary to
"Lead the Way"
By Jerri Haigler
Rotary District Governor Joe
Morris encouraged and challenged the Charlotte Rotary Club on
Tuesday when he discussed the real meaning of the organization's
theme for this year, "Leading the Way." Morris, a Rutherford, North
Carolina native, has exemplified the meaning of service starting as
an Eagle Scout, a Vietnam veteran, Lieutenant Commander in the Navy,
President of the Greater Charlotte Chapter of March of Dimes, and a
long-time, well-respected leader in the Rotary organization. Joined
by his wife Sally, a retired school teacher, and his daughter
Alicia, Morris received a warm welcome by the Charlotte Rotary Club.
In his remarks, Morris stated, "my job is to challenge you and help
you remember how powerful your club is to this community, this
state, and around the world." He stressed that the Rotary
organization needs our talent, expertise and leadership. Morris
shared with the group that our "community" extends far beyond the
borders of Mecklenburg County. As a result of the work we do, lives
are being touched around the world.
Morris shared some interesting and thought provoking statistics
during his presentation:
- $8 and ½ billion & 15
seconds
In the United States each year, we spend more than $8 ½
billion on bottled water while every 15 seconds a child
somewhere in the world dies from drinking impure,
contaminated water.
- 300 & 1
Nearly 300 people contracted polio daily before The
Rotary Foundation became involved in eliminating this
deadly disease. Today, that number has reduced to one.
|
Morris stated that if The Rotary Foundation can make such a
significant impact on polio then the devastating number of children
dying from impure water can surely be addressed by the organization
as well.
Morris drove his message home again when he shared an example from
his visit to Honduras in 1999 following Hurricane Mitch. He joined
fellow Rotarians in helping build a new home for a family impacted
by the storm. As a result of their efforts, the family went from a
cardboard shack with a dirt floor and no electricity to a new
structurally sound home. While building the home, a group of 15-20
teenagers came walking up carrying the family's oldest son in a
casket. The 17-year-old had left home as a result of the poor living
conditions and the family's inability to provide a daily meal for
him. While selling chewing gum on the street, the teenager was
murdered for the small change he had in his pocket. Although the
rest of the week was a somber time for the family and the
volunteers, Morris reminded the group that were it not for the
assistance of Rotarians, that family would still be living in a
cardboard shack, and two younger children would have no hope for the
future.
He closed his remarks applauding Rotary for helping people they'll
never meet, with causes they probably will never encounter or
understand. Morris stated, "Because of your contributions to The
Rotary Foundation, we are making a difference all over the world."
