STICK WILLIAMS
UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA - BOARD OF TRUSTEES
By Jim Kelley

Tony Lathrop introduced Stick Williams, the most recent past Chairman of the Board of Trustees for UNC - Chapel Hill. As part of his introduction Tony noted that Stick is a graduate of Chapel Hill and has been involved in various leadership positions in the university since then. Before chairing the board of trustees, he was over a period of time, Chair of the UNC - Chapel Hill Foundation, the Alumni Association and the Board of Visitors. Stick has worked his whole career with Duke Power and Duke Energy. Currently he is Vice President of Employee Development and Diversity for Duke Energy.

Stick thanked our member Cecily Durrett for training him how to be a public speaker and thanked John Tabor from the club for inviting him to speak to Charlotte Rotary. Stick also acknowledged our own Phil Van Hoy who is a graduate of a university from the dark side - also known as the University of New Jersey in the South.

Stick served on the board of trustees for six years. One of the most significant issues that Stick and the board dealt with in his tenure on the board was looking at what it meant to be a leading public university. Stick believes that an educated common person (one without financial resources) is a great public asset. So, according to Stick, a leading public university has to be accessible to those whose families may not have the financial resources to send their son or daughter to Chapel Hill. To assist those students, UNC has the Carolina Covenant that those students who gain admission to the university and live in families at 200% of the poverty level or less will receive the financial aid they need to attend UNC. Another primary focus of a leading public university is that it provides great public service to the state where it is located. At Chapel Hill, the work of the faculty and students and the results of its research should focus outward by addressing critical needs in the state. As examples of that commitment, Stick referenced the good work that the School of Public Health has done with health departments in counties across the state and he referenced the impact the School of Government has had on North Carolina communities.

Stick mentioned two of the most significant challenges facing Chapel Hill and most public universities. First is faculty retention. The faculty is the heart of any university and the private universities, who have large endowments, are taking away faculty because they can pay them more than the public universities. That issue relates to the second challenge - funding. Currently state support is a risk area because of budget concerns. With limited state funds, the universities have to compete for dollars with many other state priorities.

Chapel Hill is currently looking at its funding strategies. It is working to shore up its state support while trying to significantly increase its research dollars. Alumni and friends are becoming a more critical funding source as it begins a $1.8 million campaign. Finally the university needs to look at the tuition it charges. It can't be business as usual. They may need to begin charging tuition according to the value the students receive rather than focus on a university that provides the best value.

In closing, Stick reminded Phil and the club that UNC was the national champion last year in basketball to put the rest of the discussion in perspective.

þ Update on Resignations: Bill Wood, a member of the Club since 1977, regrets that other commitments have kept him from being a regular participant of the club. He sends his best wishes to club members and says he is especially grateful for the privilege of serving as club president in 1992. Susan Patterson has been on a six month leave while working an interim position in Miami. The good news is the position turned into a promotion for Susan; the bad news is her continued travel schedule will prevent her from attending Rotary meetings.

þ Marilynn Bowler was elected Chairman of the Board for WTVI.

þ Eric Baldwin, program director for Professional Golf Management (PGM) programs at Queens University of Charlotte, gave an interesting update in the Charlotte Business Journal on students pursuing a career in the golf industry. There was also an article on course makeover plans for several golfing facilities - including Cedarwood Country Club, location of the Rotary Scholarship Golf Classic.

þ Health & Happiness Report: Jim Adams' sister had very serious surgery this week and is hospitalized in Winston Salem; President Herb recognized those with perfect attendance during 2004-2005. A round of applause was given to Ralston Pound, Martin Waters, and Mac Jackson for each having over 50 years perfect attendance!

þ Please remember to turn your cellphone off during Rotary.

þ Rotary Scholarship Golf Classic is in need of golfers, sponsors, goody bag items, raffle items (valued at $25 or more), and auction items ($100 value or more). Chief Darrel Stephens expressed his thanks to the club for providing this benefit to families of public safety officials. Mark Your Calendar: Monday September 26th Cedarwood Country Club.

GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE
The Group Study Exchange (GSE) program of The Rotary Foundation is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business professional men and women between the ages of 25 and 40 and in the early years of their professional lives. The program provides travel grants for teams to exchange visits between paired areas in different countries. For four to six weeks, team members experience the host country's institutions and ways of life, observe their own vocations as practiced abroad, develop personal and professional relationships, and exchange ideas.

District 7680 is seeking applicants for a GSE (Rotary) Team Leader and four (non-Rotary) Team Members to visit District 7030, located in northeast South America and 11 Caribbean islands, between October 22 and November 19. Again, the Team Leader must be a Rotarian, and Team Members can not be Rotarians, nor be children, grandchildren, or spouses of Rotarians. In addition, they must have been gainfully employed for at least two years and plan to return to their places of employment.

Rotarians in our district are encouraged to identify and nominate outstanding candidates for this opportunity. The deadline for applications is Saturday, September 10th. If you have a candidate or have questions, please contact GSE Chair Susan Smith, 704-786-4783 or sjsmith@vnet.net.
